Director, Finance

The Director of Finance will have at least 10 years of finance and accounting experience and CPA accreditation. The ideal candidate will have a background in INGOs, strong leadership and management skills, and preferably an MBA. This role requires a results-oriented, collegial finance leader with technical accounting expertise, project management experience, and the ability to oversee general accounting, month and year-end consolidation, financial reporting, internal controls, and cashflow management. Reporting to the CFO and managing five direct reports, the Director will also support external audits and accounting software setups. Familiarity with accounting software and cross-cultural skills are essential. Travel once or twice a year globally is required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead general accounting and bookkeeping for the organization
  • Oversee month-end and year-end consolidation across 20+ companies and currencies
  • Manage monthly financial reporting in local currency and CAD
  • Ensure robust internal controls
  • Develop and maintain accounting policies and procedures
  • Maintain chart of accounts and dimension design
  • Oversee external financial statement audits
  • Manage accounting software setup, governance, and permissions
  • Handle cashflow management and treasury functions
  • Team leadership & management

Qualifications, Competencies & Skills

Education

  • CPA (Canadian designation) required
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (finance, accounting, commerce preferred)
  • MBA preferred
  • Additional technical accounting or technology certifications desirable

Experience

  • 10+ years in accounting and finance
  • Knowledgeable in ASPE/ASNPO or IFRS
  • Experience in the charitable sector, preferably international development or humanitarian organizations
  • Experience in multi-country, divisional organizations
  • Skilled in cross-cultural communication with international experience
  • Senior level or executive level experience
  • Strong people management skills and experience managing a small technical team
  • Strong technical accounting background and comfortable with full range of accounting practices
  • Ideally charitable sector experience with a related organization
  • Experience in a multi-country, divisional organization
  • International experience and skilled in cross-cultural communication
  • Able to set strong tone from the top regarding controls and anti-fraud orientation
  • Highly skilled in consolidation and intra-company eliminations and comfortable with foreign exchange issues
  • Sophisticated communicator, able to clearly and simply express concepts and ideas in a fashion appropriate to the level of knowledge of the counter-party
  • Capable of providing training services across the finance function and to the users of financial reports
  • Languages in addition to English would be an asset (i.e. French, Arabic, Swahili, Portuguese)
